Large June Range

Beating June 1934
09 Jun 2021 04:55 AMJune has gotten off to a hot start and with the dry conditions over parts of the state, comparisons to the infamous "Dust Bowl" have been floating around. The featured chart presents a comparison between the warmest June for Ames (1934) for average temperature and scenarios based on this year's month to date accumulated value with each previous June's data appended onto the end. None of these scenarios are able to top the 1934 value, which was really boosted by an epic warm start to that month. The forecast continues the warm temperatures, but overnight values are not too bad, which is also pulling down the average some.

June Sigma Departures
03 Jul 2017 05:26 AMWith the calendar now saying July, it is a good time to look back on June in Iowa. The featured chart compares June growing degree day and precipitation departures for a statewide Iowa average value. These departures are expressed in terms of standard deviations (sigma) from the mean. This allows for a comparison between variables that have different units of measure, but have similar statistical distributions. The value for 2017 came in just above average for GDDs and below average for precipitation. Years that are on the fringes of the plot are labelled as well.

Reaching 80+ in June
01 Jun 2017 05:02 AMOur recent stretch of weather has not seen much in the way of hot weather. It has been since mid May that temperatures were well into the 80s and even some 90s. The featured chart looks at the frequency of daily high temperatures in June being at 80+ degrees for Des Moines. While we are past Memorial Day and into June, if this temperature level is your threshold for summer, we still have a week or so to go before this warmth rises above the 50% level (meaning more common than not). The actual forecast says a bit otherwise with warm and muggier air arriving tomorrow and sticking around for the weekend.

Cold Start to June
06 Jun 2013 05:35 AMTemperatures struggled to reach 70 degrees again yesterday in Iowa. Interestingly, this year is tied with 1993! Of course, that was the great flood year in the Midwest. The forecast does hold hope that we may hit 80 degrees next week.

Extremes in June
24 Jun 2011 07:05 AMThis June has seen its fair share of extreme high temperature both on the warm and cold side. The featured chart compares the number of days above the 75th percentile with the number below the 25th for each June back to 1893. An average year would see around 15 days per month within these two intervals. Interestingly, it is much more rare to see many days in a month below the 25th. This is because the cold patterns tend to be more transient than the hot and dry patterns that can be reinforced by ample sunshine and dry conditions.
