2026 Heating Degree Days
29 Jan 2026 05:30 AMToday's featured chart presents year to date accumulated heating degree days (base 60°F). The red line is a simple average with the blue shaded region representing the range between the 25th and 75th percentile and then the tan region representing the 5th to 95th percentile. The blue dots are the 2026 values. For much of January, the accumulation was near the bottom of the observed range. The past week or two have made up for lost time with the accumulation now above the 25th percentile and inching higher. Charts like these often tell an effective story for the energy demands necessary to heat buildings as a larger accumulation implies colder temperatures and thus more energy required (read higher monetary costs).

Daily Heating Degree Days
21 Nov 2018 05:27 AMYesterday's daily feature looked at monthly accumulations of heating degree days. Today's feature looks at the daily accumulation with the values for this year indicated by dots, the long term mean in red and the range between the 5th and 95th percentile in tan. Our recent cold November weather is shown at the top end of the range, which for heating degree days makes sense. These same values (around 40) are about what is typical for the middle of the winter season. Thankfully and just in time for Thanksgiving, we are expected to have a bit warmer weather before winter cold arrives next week again.
