Sub 20°F Wind Chills

The past two days have been a stark reminder of the long winter season to come with a brisk and cold wind blowing through the state. It has been the first time this season that wind chill temperatures have been of concern. The featured chart presents the daily feels like temperature range as computed from available hourly reports from the Ames Airport. Any days with a value at or below 20°F is highlighted red. So it has been since the end of March with as cold as wind chill temperatures we have experienced these past two days. The chart nicely shows the large range of feels like temperatures for the year ranging between -45°F and 111°F!

Respite from the Heat

The really muggy and hot conditions vacated the state just in time for RAGBRAI last week and made for a number of very comfortable late July days in the state. The featured chart displays the daily range between the max and min feels like temperature for 2018 for Ames. Any date with this range at least containing 80 degrees is highlighted in red. The last few days have been very nice with the heat index only barely reaching 80 on Sunday. The heat is slowly expected to build back into the state this week, but over night lows are expected to remain comfortable.
