Way to the right

28 Jan 2016 05:34 AM
It is never too late to look back on how remarkably wet December was in Iowa. The featured chart presents the statistical distribution of December precipitation for long term stations tracked in the state by the IEM. The green lines represent the long term climatology and the blue lines/bars represent what actually happened in December 2015. The distribution for 2015 is way to the right of what climatology says should happen. Remarkably, only a few stations were even within +2 sigma from the long term average!

Four Record Days

30 Dec 2015 04:42 AM
So far, four days this December have set daily precipitation records for Waterloo. This is the most number of days within a single month on record for the site. Eight other months as shown by the featured graphic have 3 record days each. Des Moines also has had four record days this month, but that only tied September 1914 for the site. While the month is ending on a chilly note, the record precipitation was accompanied by very warm temperatures.

Little Cold this December

18 Dec 2015 05:37 AM
Only within the past day or so have temperatures been able to breach below freezing as shown by the featured chart of hourly air temperatures for Des Moines since the start of this month. The solid bars represent the range between the average low and high temperature for the day. Even our recent lows have been above the average high! Our current cool weather will give way to more days back in the 40s next week.

Precip Record Destruction

15 Dec 2015 05:35 AM
The rainfall totals from our recent storm are destroying about every record that existed for precipitation totals during the cold season in Iowa. The featured chart displays the largest 24 hour areal averaged precipitation for Iowa during the December, January, and February season. The 1.51 inches estimated by the IEM for the 24 hour period ending at 7 AM yesterday is roughly 50% larger than the second place value! Individual station totals were even higher with places like Des Moines and Waterloo rewriting the record books for cold season precipitation. Given the intensity and time of year, this recent event may go down as the most extreme precipitation event Iowa has on record!
