Calm April Days

24 Apr 2024 05:30 AM
Winds were again gusty on Tuesday with Des Moines topping 40 MPH for a peak gust during the afternoon hours. Many Iowans would likely claim that our Aprils have gotten windier than in the past. Recency bias certainly helps to reinforce this idea, but perhaps some data plots could help with this question. A recent tweet by NWSTwinCities pointed out the limited number of days this April that Minneapolis has had a peak wind gust below 30 MPH. The featured chart presents such a metric for Des Moines. Of course, the 2024 total is month to date, but it is still interesting to see the recent down trend in number of days and the 30 year running average is certainly trending in that direction as well. This chart generally points out the problematic nature of long term wind observations, with observation equipment and techniques being significantly different prior to modernization during the early 1970s. This likely explains the regime change with the plot happening near 1973. Anyway, back to this week and the forecast for Wednesday actually turns down the winds, but they will again be cranked up on Thursday.

April Wind + Temps

10 Apr 2014 05:38 AM
Temperatures warmed nicely on Wednesday thanks to a dry atmosphere and plenty of wind helping to mix warmer air. The featured chart compares the combination of 3 PM air temperature departure from long term average at 3 PM and the wind speed reported. The shaded areas represent relative frequency with the darkest shades being the most frequent. A simple fit of the data is provided by the red line and yesterday's value is indicated by the brown dot. The chart illustrates that as temperatures get more extreme in the cold or warm direction, wind speeds increase. Of course, correlation is not causation, but there are interconnected physical processes that drive temperatures and wind.

Wind in April

15 Apr 2008 07:16 AM
The NWS has issued a wind advisory today for forecasted southerly winds around 30 mph. The featured chart displays directional frequency of reported 30+ mph wind speeds during April from the Des Moines Airport. Southerly winds are not the most favored for high winds, since warming is generally occuring which leads to upward motion near the surface acting to keep the strongest winds aloft from reaching the surface. The situation is reverse with northwest winds, since there is often cooling and decending motion which acts to bring stronger winds to the surface and keep them there.
