2021 90 Degree Day Departures

Posted: 26 Aug 2021 05:31 AM

Wednesday was another warm and muggy day with highs reaching 90 degrees for a few locations in the state. The featured map presents an IEM computed departure of accumulated year to date 90 degree high temperature days against longer term climatology. The map analysis shows an interesting pattern over the contiguous US with clear see-saw between the western and southern US. Maps like these often show such a pattern as seasonal temperature departures are heavily influenced by stationary large scale patterns in the atmosphere. Areas in drought and above average precipitation also intend to positively reinforce ongoing departures. A good case in point is Iowa, which has above average values showing in the persistent drought areas of northwestern Iowa and below average values in the wetter southeastern portion of the state.
