The warmest temperatures of the year are expected today, so it is a good time to check in on some metrics describing these 'step ups' in high temperature for Ames. The "step up" describes having a day set a warmest year-to-date temperature for the year. The top panels shows the yearly number of step-ups, the middle panel shows the frequency of the temperature that the step ups occur and the bottom panel shows the daily frequency. The combination shows that we are about a third of the way this year to an average total of around 17 days. Unfortunately, cooler air arrives again with limited chance to again step up in temperature over the next week or so.
