The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
  Central Haywood County in western North Carolina...

* Until 215 AM EDT.

* At 830 PM EDT, Significant rainfall totaling 4-7 inches has been 
  observed across Haywood County, especially in the Pigeon River 
  headwaters south of Canton.  This is producing a significant and 
  life-threatening flood wave moving down the Pigeon River through 
  Canton, Clyde, and into Lake Waterville.

Haywood County Emergency Management is requesting residents near the 
Pigeon River, including in the cities of Canton and Clyde, to 
evacuate to higher ground immediately.  Evacuees are being asked to 
shelter at Tuscola High School.

  This is a FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY for Cities of Canton and Clyde and 
  Pigeon River Valley to Lake Waterville. This is a PARTICULARLY 
  DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!

  HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms
           producing flash flooding.

  SOURCE...Radar and automated rain and stream gauges.

  IMPACT...This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK
           HIGHER GROUND NOW! Life threatening flash flooding of
           low water crossings, small creeks and streams, urban
           areas, highways, streets and underpasses.  Expect
           flooding in the Pigeon River valley, including at the
           cities of Canton and Clyde, to be comparable to the
           modern-day flood of record in September 2004.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
  Canton, Clyde, Cove Creek and Fines Creek.

No significant additional rainfall is expected.  The floodwave is 
expected to crest in Canton within the next 2-3 hours and the Pigeon 
River at Canton is expected to reach between 21 and 23 feet, which 
is similar to crests that occurred in September 2004.  Prepare NOW 
for similar flooding and damage with extensive, significant damage 
to homes, businesses, and roadways along the Pigeon River.  If you 
live near the Pigeon River or adjacent tributaries from Canton to 
Clyde to Fines Creek you are urged to take action now to protect 
your life and flee to higher ground.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Move to higher ground now! This is an extremely dangerous and 
life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are 
fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood

At 1040 PM EDT, UPDATE: The Pigeon River streamgauge at Canton 
crested at 19.8 feet at 8:15 pm.  The floodwave peak has passed 
Canton and is currently working through Clyde.  Therefore, while 
significant Major flood levels are decreasing slowly in Canton, new 
areas of significant flooding downstream from Clyde to Lake 
Waterville are expected to develop and continue over the next 
several hours.  Do not let your guard down and continue to heed all 
guidance from local officials as it will take quite some time for 
floodwaters to fully recede.

Significant rainfall totaling 4-7 inches was observed across Haywood 
County, especially in the Pigeon River headwaters south of Canton.  
This is producing a significant and life-threatening flood wave 
moving down the Pigeon River through Canton, Clyde, and into Lake
