Winds were howling on Wednesday as a strong arctic front plowed through the state. The cold air behind the front was at least delayed for most of the state until later in the afternoon and evening, so wind chill values did not get out of hand during the day. Reported wind gusts from the airports were impressive as shown by the featured map. Much of the state is shown above 50 MPH with even a couple of 60+ MPH reports at Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. For those not wishing for full blown winter yet, there is good news that the cold air will not stick around long with milder air arriving in time for the weekend.
