Mississippi River Warmth

Posted: 11 Nov 2024 05:17 AM

The featured map presents the minimum low temperature since the first of October from long term climate sites tracked by the IEM. Very cold air for this time of year has been limited thus far with only a few sites dipping down into the teens. Of particular interest to today's plot are the warmest plotted values shown along the Mississippi River valley. Places like Dubuque at 33, Davenport at 33, and Burlington at 34 nicely show the warming effect of being next to a significant amount of water. Water does not cool as rapidly as soil, so near surface air temperatures will be warmer next to water than soil.
