Saskatchewan warmer than Florida

Posted: 31 Jan 2024 05:30 AM

Warm air continues to build into the high plains with very warm for late January temperatures found well into Canada. A high temperature of 70°F was reported at a site in Saskatchewan, which happened to be warmer than a number of sites in Florida! This type of contrast is typical with a "long wave" weather pattern that pushes warm air north over the western North American and cold air south over eastern. The featured chart looks at the daily high and low temperature difference between the Maple Creek site in Saskatchewan and Jacksonville in Florida. It is remarkable to see small positive difference shown against a 100°F difference just a few weeks ago. The warmer half of the year certainly sees more of these events with the Maple Creek site warmer than Jacksonville, but the overall frequency is only 3%. Florida is certainly a better bet for warmer weather than Saskatchewan this time of year!
