A number of recent daily features (1, 2) have denoted the record warmth during December. It makes sense that we have seen very limited amounts of seasonally cold air so far this winter. The featured chart presents the yearly minimum low temperature between 1 November and 3 January for Ames. The COOP site southeast of town has reported a minimum temperature of just seven degrees over this period and that was back in November! This ties the warmest minimum back during the winter of 2015-2016. The near term forecast continues this trend of not much for cold temperatures, but forecasters continue to closely monitor the first big winter storm of the season forecast next week.
