Des Moines First Snowfall

Posted: 27 Oct 2023 05:30 AM

The warm air mass that was present over the state for much of this week is being replaced by something more resembling winter. Much colder temperatures are on the way along with a chance of snowfall for this weekend. So it is an appropriate time to bring out the first measurable snowfall of the season climatology chart for Des Moines. Each year's first daily snow measurement is plotted along with how long snow cover persisted. For the end of October, we are in about the 10-15th percentile, so nothing too extreme. You can see that these early season snowfalls do not stick around long as soil temperatures are still quite warm and any late fall season sunshine will make quick work to melt it away. Welcome to Winter!
