Special Weather Statements

Posted: 27 Sep 2023 05:30 AM

As a part of the National Weather Service's mission to protect life and property, they issue a targeted area headline called Special Weather Statements (abbreviated SPS for strange legacy reasons and the SWS abbreviation was already taken). These alerts are for sub-severe events and other phenomena not necessarily covered by or significant enough to warrant a full blown headline issuance (ie Severe Thunderstorm Warning). Some of these SPSes contain polygons to more precisely define an impacted area and these are the subject today's featured chart. The chart presents the number of SPS events with polygons issued by NWS Davenport per month and year. Yesterday saw the issuance of 13 of these events by the office as a number of storms impacted the region. The IEM maintains an text archive of these and offers a shapefile download of the polygons with associated tags found within the text.
