Aug vs Sep Highs

Posted: 10 Aug 2023 05:30 AM

Some early morning showers on Wednesday gave way to a rather nice August day with comfortable highs in the 70s and lower 80s. As we continue to push closer to September, it is a good time to compare the high temperatures between the two months for Ames. The featured chart does this that by looking at some statistical parameters for the distribution of daily highs for both months. The left panel shows a quantile to quantile plot with the right panel showing a kernel density estimate. Raw percentile values are shown at the far right. Interestingly, there's not too much difference between the high end of the range between the two months, but there is certainly a lot more difference at the low end. Such is the case as September transitions us into more fall season confined high temperatures. The near term forecast keeps us closer to summer than fall, but nothing too terrible!
