Noisy Overnights

Those of you with young children and even pets know the dread of seeing thunderstorms in the forecast for the overnight hours. The featured map looks into the frequency of having such overnight events with the arbitrary metric chosen to total the number of times at least one thunder report was recorded by an airport weather station between 9 PM and 7 AM local time. So the plotted values represent the average number of overnights per year with at least one thunder report. The map shows a clear pattern over the US with the lowest values found along the California coast and highest values over the plains. The highest values over the plains are associated with nocturnal thunderstorms fueled by the low level jet.
