Thursday was yet another very windy day this spring season with many reports of gusts over 50 MPH and even a few 60+ MPH. Along with low humidity values, the NWS issued both High Wind and Fire Weather Warnings over the state. The featured chart presents daily average wind speeds calculated by the IEM for Ames. Yesterday's average was just a bit lower than April 7th. A vector averaged wind direction is presented along with a simple and smoothed period of record climatology. Based on this metric, just over half of the days have been above average which seems lower than recency bias would assume!
