The severe weather threat on Saturday materialized and then some with unfortunately deadly storms over southern Iowa. The featured movie lapses NWS RADAR, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings (yellow), Tornado Warnings (red), and unfiltered local storm reports. The first round of storms were rather tame compared with what followed, but they were likely helpful to prime the lower atmospheric environment for the storms that followed. It is very early in the season to have such an outbreak of severe weather, let alone tornadoes of such strength and such large hail (up to baseball size). Given this is following the epic storm events of 15 December 2021, one wonders how many more big events like this are in store this severe weather season. And as if on cue to remind us of which season it actually is during the first week of March, accumulating and significant snowfall is falling this morning over these hard hit areas.
