Yearly Max Heat Index
Posted: 22 Jul 2021 05:35 AM
Heat and humidity levels have been building this week, but have yet to reach the hottest levels seen
earlier this year. The featured chart presents the year maximum heat index value as calculated by
the IEM based on available hourly temperature and dew point observations. The top panel shows
the frequency of the yearly max at or above a given level. The bottom panel shows the simple yearly
max. The maximum value shown came back in 1936 on 25 July with a temperature of 111 and dew
point of 70 degrees. It is difficult to access the accuracy of that observation back then, but it does not
seem impossible given the very hot weather that day.
