Summertime Precip Changes
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 05:04 AM
The featured map presents the difference in precipitation total per year between the most recent 30
year periods during the summer (June, July, August) season. For example, a plotted two inch value
would imply that on-average two more inches per year fell during the summer season during the
1991-2020 period vs 1961-1990. On a small spatial and even temporal scale, these type of plots
tend to be noisy as individual wet years like 1993 can skew the results somewhat. It is still interesting
to see the general increases and the most consistent increases over northeastern Iowa. For a state
dominated by seasonal rain-fed agricultural, having more rainfall during the summer season is likely a
net positive.
