Day 2 Enhanced Risk

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:02 AM

The Storm Prediction Center's (SPC) "Day 2" convective outlook issued on Thursday afternoon covering the weather on Friday placed much of southern Iowa in an "Enhanced Risk" (level 3 out of a maximum 5) for severe storms. The featured map presents a climatology of these issued enhanced risks since the SPC started using that threat level back in 2015. On average, Iowa sees about one of these events per year with the highest frequencies found for the US from Oklahoma east toward Mississippi. It will be interesting to see if the severe weather threat materializes Friday afternoon as the ongoing drought conditions and lack of significant atmospheric moisture has limited severe weather in the state so far this year.
