Ames vs Boone
Posted: 20 May 2021 05:50 AM
The Ames and Boone airport weather stations are separated by just over twelve miles as the crow
flies. On Wedneday, the high temperature at Ames was 78 and Boone was 77 making for just a one
degree difference. The featured chart compares afternoon high temperatures between the sites by
day of the year for the top panel and by average wind speed for the bottom panel. The shading
represents population density. Qualitatively, there's not much difference between the two sites so
having close high temperatures is common as one may expect for two close-by locations that have
similar surrounding landuse. The wind panel tells the story here as typically the lower atmosphere is
well mixed during the afternoon hours so micro-climate influences are mitigated. You can generate
this plot, but for morning low temperatures and see a much different story as Ames trends cooler
thanks to subtle topography and sandier soils.
