Recent Monthly Reliability

While rain amounts have generally not been too heavy over Iowa these past few days, it is at least attempting to rain about each day. The spring season is an important time of year for Iowa to receive rainfall to help charge soil moisture for the growing season. The featured chart presents the percentage of months over the past 20 years that had a monthly precipitation total of at least 80% of average for the given month. The average is computed over the period of record dataset. It is interesting to see April and May topping the percentages for Des Moines. Rewording, over the past 20 years the months of April and May have had the fewest number of instances with a precipitation total below 80% of average. The total for this April was well below average and May is not off to much better a start.
