Comparing February Halves

Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:35 AM

The featured chart compares average daily high temperatures for Ames for roughly the first half of February against the second half of February for each year on record for the site. Some statistical diagnostics are presented as well and show that there isn't too strong of a correlation between the two. For example, a colder than average first half of the month does not necessarily mean the second half will be colder than average as well. The quadrant frequencies are labelled showing the populations for each. It is interesting to see the smallest proportion shown within the colder than average first half of the month and then warmer than average second half. While not shown by this plot, the presence of persistent snow cover is likely why such a combination is least likely as snow generally represses warmer temperatures.
