Headed Back Left

Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:34 AM

The featured chart presents the time progression of precipitation vs temperature standardized departures since early October for Des Moines. The arrows indicate the time series as the 14 day departure metrics are evaluated every seven days. Since we are dealing with bounded values and semi-correlated data, this chart will often nicely show cycles between combinations of cool/warm and wet/dry periods. The chart nicely tells the story of this cold season with very cold conditions dominating late October, but then followed by a rather tranquil period with not much for extreme weather. The weather this week is an abrupt change as you can see the most recent arrow headed quickly back to the left side of this chart (cold departures) and will move further to the left as this cold weather persists.
