The featured chart presents Growing Degree Day accumulations since 1 May for Des Moines. This year is plotted along with last year, a simple long term average, and the envelope of the period of record data. The lower panel shows the accumulated departure from average. It is interesting to notice how closely this year is tracking last year with our accumulated deficit so far just below 50. The forecast for the rest of this week has mild temperatures and warm overnight lows until later in the week, so we may be able to make up a bit of the deficit.
