Warm Rain

Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:12 AM

Temperatures warmed very nicely again on Thursday with some late afternoon showers and thunderstorms firing. These storms dumped rain with temperatures generally in the 60s. Getting rain at such warm temperatures during April is somewhat exceptional as shown by the featured chart. The chart shows a heatmap of temperature reports coincident with reports of measurable rainfall for Ames based on period of record data. During April, the frequency of events over 60 degrees is much smaller than at colder levels. Old timers will say that such warm spring rains are good for warming up the soil and mellowing it out to prepare for planting.
