Tornado Warnings

Posted: 25 Mar 2020 03:59 AM

Continuing with the theme of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa this week, today's topic is Tornadoes. Typically there would be a statewide Tornado Warning drill this morning, but due to the ongoing "social distancing" effort, it has been cancelled to avoid crowding people together in shelters. One of the main reasons we have an awareness week in Iowa is due to our cold half of the year being generally free of tornado producing severe storms. The featured chart shows the daily number of Tornado Warnings for Iowa since last April. The last sustained activity was over six months ago back in September, which given the current events seems like ages ago.
