Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:34 AM

The featured chart presents metrics regarding the yearly progression of setting new year to date maximum daily high temperatures. Such an event happened this past Sunday for much of the state with new year to date warmest temperatures being set. The top panel counts the number of times each year a new year to date maximum temperature is set. The middle panel plots the temperature frequency when these events occur and the bottom panel shows the frequency by day of the year. The bottom panel shows that March is a favored time of year for these events to occur with frequencies declining until June into July. March is a favored time of year as ever increasing solar angle helps to warm soil temperatures and generally remove snow cover allowing air temperatures to warm. June/July benefits from the warmest soil temperatures and peak insolation.
