Early for first frozen day

Posted: 08 Nov 2019 05:35 AM

Thursday was very cold for this time of year with high temperatures struggling below freezing for much of the state. The high temperature for Ames only reached 28 degrees making for the first frozen day (high temperature below freezing) of the season. The featured chart presents the accumulated observed frequencies of the first fall season date below a given threshold for high temperature. For the 7th of November and 28 degrees, the frequency is about 5%. So roughly one in twenty years have seen as cold a high temperature by this date. The good news is that warmer weather returns this weekend, but enjoy it before big time cold air arrives next week.
