October Avg Daily Winds

Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:34 AM

The winds were howling again during the daytime hours on Sunday with speed wind gusts in the 30 to 40 MPH range. These strong winds at the surface are driven by daytime mixing of the lower atmosphere by solar insolation, which brings higher speed air aloft to the surface. With the loss of heating, the winds at the surface slacken as stability increases. The featured chart looks at the daily average wind speed and direction for Ames this month. So based on the average speed, Sunday was the windiest day since the third of October.
