The coldest weather, by far, was observed on Sunday in Iowa with low temperatures well below zero. The Ames Airport bottomed out at -16. Could this be the coldest temperature of the season and is it rare to have the coldest temperature in December? The featured chart displays the first date of the winter season that had the coldest temperature for that season. The bottom panel shows a simple histogram for each date. While January is certainly the preferred month, these events have happened in past Decembers as well. A bit more disconcerting is to see events appear in March as well! Just a reminder of how much winter we have left.
