Far NE Iowa Flooding

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 05:35 AM

We have seen plenty of extreme rainfall events this summer in Iowa. This time extreme northeastern Iowa was hit hard with storm totals between 6-8 inches over a good portion of a three county area. You only need to travel about a county's distance south to find near zero totals from the same event! The featured chart displays the combination of RADAR based estimated precipitation from MRMS (contours) and actual observed reports (point labels). It is seeminglyt rare to see MRMS under-estimate precipitation totals, but it did for this event. Flooding is ongoing in the area with some gauges at all time record highs (like the Upper Iowa River at Dorchester).
