Rough flying
Posted: 13 Oct 2006 06:48 AM
The Slater wind profiler is a vertically pointing RADAR that detects horizontal wind speeds over the site. The sensor Thursday afternoon indicated 120 knot winds located right about at the levels where planes fly (10 km == ~32 thousand feet). These strong winds are courtesy of a very powerful cut off upper low near the Great Lakes.
