SPS Counts

Posted: 11 Dec 2024 05:30 AM

A snowfall event is ongoing this Wednesday morning and while snowfall totals are expected to be not much more than an inch or two, this snowfall will likely have travel impacts with falling snow during morning commutes. The NWS uses a Special Weather Statement (abbreviated SPS) to alert the public to weather situations that remain below watch, warning, or advisory criteria. The NWS offices for Iowa have issued a number of such statements as the more intense snowfall areas have drifted through the state. The featured map presents the number of SPS products issued for the year by NWS Forecast Office based on unofficial IEM archives. There are a few offices over the country that have local policies to not issue such a product, but all of the offices covering Iowa do.
