March Precip Increase

Posted: 20 Mar 2024 05:30 AM

With the spring equinox behind us, we are now in the astronomical spring season. With the main weather story being the ongoing drought situation over most of the state, the receipt of rainfall becomes more important with each passing day. One of the reasons why is the daily rainfall climatology increases each day, so the lack of rainfall will dig us an even bigger hole more quickly than dry weather during the winter season. An illustration of this increasing climatology is found by the featured map. It presents the difference in daily precipitation climatology between 5 and 26 March. The main area of the largest positive values can be found over Iowa, which again is a sign of how spring precipitation starts to ran up during late March and into April. The good news is that a number of precipitation events are in the forecast along with some chances of wet snowfall. If you like this map, a yearly long time lapse of it was posted to Twitter/X.
