Besting February 1954

For many of the long term climate sites in Iowa, February 1954 was the warmest February on record for average temperature. This year appears to be taking a run at the record with yet another very warm day in Iowa on Tuesday. The featured chart presents a scenario plot of month to date average temperature for Waterloo. The black line shows the record value for 1954. The red line is the 2024 to date value with each tan line representing a scenario consisting of a previous year's Feb 21-28(or 29) values appended onto this year's values. The scenarios show a 12% chance of beating 1954 based on what has happened in the past. The actual forecast through the end of the month looks very warm and it seems likely that 2024 will come in as warmest February for Waterloo.
