Streaks Below 32°F

Posted: 24 Jan 2024 05:30 AM

A map of airport high/low temperatures yesterday indicates that nearly the entire state made it above freezing, some for the first time in about two weeks. The featured chart presents the longest streaks of having a high temperature below 32°F for Ames. The IEM labelled IATAME site threads together a number of observation sites to create a long term climate record. The present day data is from the Ames Water Pollution Control facility SE of town along I-35. This site reported a 24 hour high temperature Tuesday morning at 8 AM of 33°F, which ended a 14 day streak below freezing. This falls seven days short of reaching at top 20 long streak. The chart shows that such streaks are possible during February and March as persistent snow cover is still possible for these months, which helps to support long stretches of sub 32°F temperatures.
