The IEM attempts to compute statewide areal averages of temperature and precipitation. This unofficial work computes this just completed December as the warmest on record since 1893 for Iowa. NCEI generates official stats, but those won't be released until next week. There is also an autoplot that compares IEM vs NCEI estimates, which shows that recent IEM estimates are very close to the official numbers. Anyway, the start of 2024 will feature seasonable temperatures with not much in the way of precipitation chances. Happy New Year!
