Inversion Stations
Posted: 27 May 2022 05:33 AM
The daily feature a few days back introduced some data from a newly installed inversion near Ames.
There are three total stations installed with the featured screenshot showing the primary interface for
near real-time data from these stations. When the red arrows are pointing down, it indicates that the 10
foot temperature is warmer than the 1.5 foot temperature. The green arrow indicates the opposite. The
main application of this data is diagnosing when agricultural spray drift can become a heightened
concern. Presence of an inversion is most common during the overnight hours and around dusk and
dawn. Typically any solar insolation and/or wind breeze is able to mix the near surface air to wash
these inversions out. More functionality from this dataset will be coming to the IEM website soon along
with more daily features highlighting the data!
