Primary roads have significantly improved since the major winter storm on Monday into Tuesday dumped over a foot of snow across parts of southwestern Iowa and significant amounts elsewhere in the state. The long duration snow event, intense snowfall rates, cold temperatures, and wind made for a difficult task for snow plow drivers to keep ahead of the snow. The featured movie combines Iowa DOT track-a-plow locations (purple dots), winter road condition reports, and RADAR mosaic imagery from early Monday morning till Tuesday evening. The march of the snow plows over the various roadways looks like ant tracks as the lapse nicely shows the response of snow plows to the shown RADAR returns indicating falling snow.
