With the upcoming shot of very cold air forecast for Christmas Eve, it may not be a good idea to emphasis how tame temperatures have been so far this December. The featured chart presents a 2D histogram of the frequency of daily high and low temperatures during December for Ames along with the 2020 observations denoted by red "x"s. Most of the values for 2020 are shown on the warm half of the plot with not much shown for extreme cold. The chart nicely shows the clustering of high temperatures just above freezing and the dominance of below freezing low temperatures. While not shown, snow cover and clouds make a tremendous influence on where the most frequent temperature combinations lie.
