Snow Cover and Highs / Lows
Posted: 16 Dec 2020 05:36 AM
Temperatures continue to struggle a bit this week with plenty of snow cover around. The presence of
snow certainly makes a difference to near surface air temperatures we experience. The featured
chart presents the daily high and low temperature distributions by month on days without and with
snow cover for Des Moines. The distributions are presented in the form of violin plots with each half
violin representing a smoothed kernel density estimate at the given temperature. The wider portions
of the violin represent higher frequencies. Each distribution has its mean marked and labeled. So
the plot clearly shows the negative impact for temperature when snow cover is present. For
December, the difference is the upper 20s with snow to lower 40s without.
