Widespread Rain events of 2019

Posted: 27 Mar 2020 04:49 AM

The final day of Severe Weather Awareness Week focuses on flooding. Last year saw a number of Flood events with some even lasting into early this year. The featured chart presents some statewide metrics on coverage of a half inch of rainfall. The top panel shows the daily areal coverage of receiving a half inch partitioned by the antecedent precipitation total. The bottom panel attempts to show how efficient those rains were at falling over areas that were dry. The widespread event on mid March was the big one as that rain fell over a snow pack with frozen soil creating major runoff and flooding, particularly on the Missouri River.
