Recent Extremes

Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:35 AM

The featured chart is a fun way to show the recent time series of accumulated temperature and precipitation departures. The chart is for Vinton (eastcentral Iowa) since mid August and plots the trailing two week departure of temperature and precipitation in units of sigma (standard deviation). The arrows connect the time progression of this value evaluated every two weeks. Following the arrows you can see the change from one extreme to another this fall season. The warm September was followed by a wet October and now cold late October into November. We've progressed from one extreme to another and the forecast looks to continue the recent cold stretch with even colder temperatures on the way.
