The colorful featured chart shows the year that the present day daily high and low temperatures reside for Des Moines. The colors partition the data by decade and any present day ties will count for each respective year/decade. The chart nicely shows a number of climate facts for our state. Much of the record cold dates are from the late 1800s and early 1900s. For warm temperatures, the 1930s dominate the present day record totals. The summers of the 1930s set a very high bar for high temperatures that have rarely been beat since. The common explanation for this is our increased agricultural activity leading to a more humid climate during the summer, which then requires more energy to heat up.
