A powerful springtime storm system brought thunderstorms to southern Iowa along with a Tornado Watch being issued, while northern Iowa got freezing rain and snow. It is springtime in Iowa! The featured map is an analysis of snowfall reports with very heavy (literally) totals confined to northern Iowa. The snowfall gradient was sharp. Freezing rain was an issue with this system as well.

Yet another quick moving and light snowfall amount producing storm sprinkled an inch or two of snowfall over east-central Iowa. Calling it a winter storm is being a bit generous, but keeps with the IEM Daily Feature nomenclature of numbering snow producing systems that bring 2+ inches of snow over some portion of Iowa. For this system, the very isolated two inch reports were just west of Cedar Rapids.

Winter made a formidable return to start off March with most of northern Iowa receiving 2-4 inches of snow. This snow comes after a very mild weekend that had many folks thinking of spring. Of course the spring season in Iowa still has plenty of snowfall events and it would not be the Iowa State Girl's Basketball Tournament without a snowfall during it. The nice aspect of snow this late in the winter season is that the increasing solar angle will make quick work of melting the snow and clearing off roadways.

While again the most recent snow producing winter storm system was not very impressive, it did dump 1-3 inches of snow over a good portion of NW Iowa. This snow came as an unpleasant return to winter after some very warm conditions to end the previous week. The forecast for this week is not all bad, but temperatures will not be as warm although sunshine should abound.

The accumulating snow winter storm systems have come in rapid succession for the past few weeks. The featured map displays snowfall totals since Saturday, which technically contains totals from more than one winter storm system. It is near impossible to separate these totals as the systems were within the reporting interval of the data. In general much of the eastern half of the state got 3-4 inches with some isolated higher totals. More chances of light snow are in the forecast before a long anticipated warm up arrives for the remainder of the week.

As with the previous winter "storm" that only produced an inch or snow of fluffy snow, this most recent quick passing snow producer only produced an inch or less over Iowa. Another snow producing storm arrives this weekend along with bitter cold temperatures. Snowfall totals are expected to be more substantial with this next system

While not much of a winter storm, the most recent light snowfall producer did accumulate 1- 2 inches of fluff over a NW to SE stripe over Iowa as shown by the featured map. There was not much wind with this system, so there were not near as many travel difficulties as compared with the previous storm system. We still have two more light snowfall producing systems to go before warmer weather is forecasted to arrive next week!

For what the most recent winter storm lacked in snowfall, it made up for in very strong and persistent winds. Snowfall totals as shown by the featured map were generally around an inch or less, but this snow was blown around and created blizzard conditions especially over north central Iowa. Interstate 35 was closed for a while on Monday afternoon north of Ames to Mason City due to accidents and poor visibility. More snow is in the forecast, but the winds are not expected to be as bad!

The Groundhog's day blizzard packed a major punch for Iowa with significant amounts of snowfall over northern Iowa and plenty of blowing and drifting snow. The featured map displays an analysis of snowfall reports with some isolated totals over a foot near Sioux City. Needless to say, this winter storm created major travel issues which continue this Wednesday morning with travel not advised over much of northwestern Iowa.

The most recent passing winter storm produced a dusting to about 3 inches of snow over Iowa. This snowfall did create travel issues along with a brisk wind causing some blowing snow over the roadways. The forecast has warmer temperatures in store, so there is hope of melting some of this off soon. Also note, the IEM produces these maps for snowfalls where totals of 2+ inches were reported. There have been other systems that produced a dusting to maybe an inch or so that are not captured by these maps and storm accounting for the season.

The most recent winter storm brought the heaviest totals of snow to far southwestern Iowa with isolated reports over four inches. The majority of the state saw just a dusting to around an inch. The snowfall did create a number of travel headaches as temperatures were very cold, which decrease the effectiveness of treated roadways.

A massive storm system that brought damaging tornados to Texas and flooding rains to much of the country has finally moved east and brought freezing rain, sleet, and snow to the upper Midwest. The featured map displays an analysis of snowfall reports from this storm. Isolated amounts over 10 inches were reported with much of the state in the 3-7 inch range.

A White Christmas arrived just in time for much of the state on Thursday. The featured map displays an analysis of reports with the heaviest totals running from Omaha to just north of Ames. Please note that the number of reports that went into this analysis is much lower than average due to today being a holiday. The map will be updated later today once more reports arrive.

'15-'16 Winter Storm #2

While light snow is still falling over northwestern Iowa, a majority of the snowfall has already fallen from the current winter storm system. The highest totals were upwards of 10 inches over extreme northwestern Iowa with amounts decreasing to the south and east. This storm complex also brought significant amounts of freezing rain to portions of northern Iowa as well. The forecast has a return to warmer temperatures after this system departs with no other winter storms in the forecast for the immediate near term period.

The first significant snowfall of the season for Iowa brought totals near a foot over some of northern Iowa. The featured analysis combines NWS Local Storm Reports, COOP, and CoCoRaHS reports. The IEM produces this analysis for each significant snowfall of the season (typically those with at least a two inch report in the state).
