'14-'15 Winter Storm #18

10 Apr 2015 08:15 AM
It was a crazy day of weather in Iowa on Thursday. Tornadoes, highs near 80, highs near 40, large hail, fog, wind, and snow all happened somewhere in the state! The featured map is an attempted analysis of Local Storm Reports and COOP reports of snowfall. The snowfall reports are problematic as much of it already melted over night and so the reports this morning may have missed some of the totals that did fall.

'14-'15 Winter Storm #17

27 Mar 2015 05:39 AM
Accumulating snow fell Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with totals approaching four inches over limited areas of northern Iowa as shown by the featured analysis map. Even though we officially into spring, climatology tells us that there are still plenty of chances of snow left before we reach summer. The historical frequencies of snowfall do not reach negligible levels until the end of April.

'14-'15 Winter Storm #16

24 Mar 2015 05:40 AM
The most recent snow producing storm dumped an impressive amount of snow over a very short period of time over a very limited area. The featured map shows an analysis of COOP, Local Storm, and CoCoRaHS reports. A narrow stretch of northeastern Iowa got 9- 11 inches with totals rapidly dropping off to the south. These types of gradients are commonly what happens when the snowfall becomes convective . Over Clayton County, the totals within the county ranged from an inch to eleven inches! This snowfall was extremely wet and with rain in the forecast, this may cause some flooding issues as it will rapidly melt.

'14-'15 Winter Storm #15

04 Mar 2015 05:41 AM
While the most recent winter storm did not produce much in the way of snowfall as shown by the featured map, it did also bring some freezing rain which created slick travel for a while on Tuesday morning. The major storm for the United States today will pass to our south with Iowa stuck in the very cold air. The forecast does contain hope for spring like weather come next week, so a spring break may be coming soon for those tired of winter!

'14-'15 Winter Storm #13

05 Feb 2015 08:16 AM
Our most recent snow producing winter storm brought 3 to 6 inches over much of southern Iowa yesterday morning. This snowfall was a much lighter (higher snow to liquid ratios) snow than what fell over this past weekend. The forecast continues to point to a warm up into the weekend that should help melt some of our recent gifts from Old Man Winter.

'14-'15 Winter Storm #12

04 Feb 2015 08:19 AM
While nowhere near the intensity of our past weekend snow producing system, a winter storm system did clip Northeastern Iowa with an inch or two of new snowfall. The featured map attempts to report only snowfall totals from that storm and not the current one that is dumping snow this morning over Southern Iowa. The map tomorrow will contain totals from the current snow producing system. For those of you that do not like the snow, much warmer weather is in the forecast with a big snow melt upcoming.

'14-'15 Winter Storm #11

02 Feb 2015 08:04 AM
It was a super snowfall for Super Bowl Sunday weekend! Snowfall totals over a foot were common from Des Moines east to Chicago. The featured snowfall analysis has most of the state over seven inches. The initial snowfall had low liquid to snowfall ratios, which made moving the snow a back-aching adventure. The tail end of the snowfall event happened at colder temperatures and combined with strong winds, made for blowing and drifting snow. Very cold air has settled into Iowa this Monday morning with even light winds creating dangerous wind chills.

'14-'15 Winter Storm #10

Our most recent clipper winter storm system brought just an inch or two to portions of southeastern Iowa. This storm system is now approaching the east coast and merge with other energy to grow into a massive storm that is expected to bring blizzard conditions to the northeastern US. Much of this snowfall for Iowa did not survive until Monday and warm temperatures today will help to melt the rest of it.

While the vast majority of impacts from the most recent winter storm system were felt to Iowa's south and east, a swath of snow did fall over extreme southeastern Iowa with totals approaching 2-3 inches as you cross into Illinois. Cold air behind this system has arrived this Monday morning and bitter cold sticking around into Tuesday. Warmer weather is in the forecast for the upcoming weekend.

'14-'15 Winter Storm #4

27 Nov 2014 07:38 AM
The most significant snowfall of the season arrived just in time to complicate the Thanksgiving travel plans of some Iowans. The featured map displays an analysis of snowfall reports. The snowfall pattern is interesting with a stripe of 3-8 inches along and just west of I-35 in northern Iowa. Temperatures were close to freezing during the snow, which helped keep roads in fair shape. Conditions deteriorated overnight as bitterly cold air settled in and water on the roadways froze up.

The first major winter storm of the season is pulling east this morning and leaving a dusting of snow over much of Iowa in its wake. The heaviest totals for Iowa of just an inch or two fell over the Minnesota/Iowa border. The IEM generates a map like this for each measurable or significant snow storm for the season. This analysis is based on NWS COOP reports, NWS Storm Reports, and CoCoRaHS observations.
