Wet Thanksgiving

The featured map displays NOAA MRMS precipitation estimates for Thanksgiving Day. Half of the state is analyzed to have received over an inch with some isolated two inch amounts. Thankfully, most of this fell in the liquid form and travel difficulties were limited to western Iowa. Cold air has settled into the state and looks to stick around for the next week with highs in the 30s.

Cold Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving was one of the coldest on record for the state. The featured table displays the hourly temperatures reported at the Des Moines Airport with the most recent date with as cold a temperature at that hour. With data back to the late 1920s, the early morning hours were the coldest on record. The around noon time temperatures were the coldest Thanksgiving since 1950! After a quick warm-up on Saturday, temperatures have crashed once again with bitterly cold temperatures over Iowa this Monday morning.

White Thanksgiving and Christmas

Much of Iowa looks to be in line to experience a white Thanksgiving (having snow cover). The featured chart presents the observed frequencies of white Thanksgiving, Christmas, and years with both days having snow cover based on long term data for Des Moines. Please note that the Thanksgiving total is for the fourth Thursday of November for each year since 1893, but the actual thanksgiving was on a different date some years prior to 1941. Having snow cover on Thanksgiving does slightly elevate your chances for snow cover on Christmas, but its not an absolute.

Thanksgiving Warmth

Our weather has taken a remarkable change after Thanksgiving last week. The featured chart shows that for the 6 days prior to and including Thanksgiving, Des Moines has the warmest average high temperature for that period this year. Cold air has since replaced the pre-Thanksgiving warmth and high temperatures have been struggling in the 30s. The forecast has a slow warm-up this week with highs back near 50 degrees by the weekend.

Thanksgiving Treat

Temperatures have warmed nicely on Thanksgiving with 50s and 60s reported in Iowa. For Ames, today is the warmest day since the first of the month (23 days). The featured chart presents the number of days prior to Thanksgiving that were cooler than the high temperature on Thanksgiving. This year's total is the second longest on record! Reality will set back in with highs back below average by next week.

Coldest Turkey Day in 15 years

Forecasted high temperatures for Thanksgiving look to be well below freezing. The featured chart presents the high and low temperature for Thanksgiving's past at Des Moines. This should be the coldest day since 1995 and only warmer than way back in 1985. Another big story are the driving conditions over the upper midwest with icey and snowy expected to cause travel difficulties. For Iowa, these impacts look to be limited over the northern half of the state. Regardless of the cold and ice, have a great Thanksgiving!

The chart does not indicate any increased observance of precipitation on or near Thanksgiving. The actual forecast for this week has precip chances every day until Friday, with a chance of some snow on Wednesday into Thursday.
