Plenty of warm days

01 Nov 2010 05:35 AM
With October now in the books, a look back on the number of days where the high was above average shows plenty of warm days were to be had for the month. In fact, October saw the largest number of days above normal for high temperature since last November and made for the eight month in a row where there were more than 15 days above average for high and low temperature. Based on IEM calculations, this is only the third time on record for Des Moines to have such a streak last eight months (1987 and 2006). November looks to start off on the cool side with mostly dry weather expected.

Better October than last year

22 Oct 2010 05:55 AM
The featured graph presents the daily high temperatures for the last four months of the year for this year and last along with the climatology and a blue line indicating the latest day of the year to have experienced a given temperature. The blue dots for this October show how much warmer it has been than last year's cross symbols. Last year did see a very mild November, so perhaps this November will be payback for all the warm weather we experienced this year. Highs today will be in the mid to upper 70s, which is well above the average near 60.
